Pickled fish holds a significant place in South African culinary heritage, particularly among the Cape Malay community. This flavourful dish has a rich history dating back to the 17th century when Dutch settlers first arrived in the Cape of Good Hope. As they encountered the abundant marine life along the coast, they adapted their pickling techniques to preserve fish, creating what would become known as pickled fish.
